Chapter 40: The Wicked Unaware is the fourth chapter of the fourth book of the series, and fortieth chapter overall.

The title comes from the name given to unbelievers by the members of Edy’s former church.

The chapter contains five flashback scenes occurring over late 2004, and the remaining twenty scenes all taking place on the weekend of 11–12 January 2020.

Plot

In August 2004, a young zealot named Seth prepares to leave his cult-like church, to do terrible things to the wicked

In the present day, Diana arrives back at Dorley

Back in 2004, Seth spends his eighteenth birthday protesting against abortion outside a London hospital

Once again in 2020, Steph unexpectedly encounters Diana and both of them react badly

Frankie reassures Diana about her encounter with Steph

A waking Bethany surprises herself by how much at home she feels with Steph

Diana gets her estradiol shot and after showing her the clothing storeroom, Monica offers to do her face

Shahida wakes up in the middle of Liss and Abby after their (messy) three-way

Diana meets with Valérie and Beatrice

In October 2024, Seth is back at home meeting his Mum and Little Adam

Again in 2020, Steph is beating herself up about her interaction with Diana

Leigh thinks about Diana while returning below to find full disclosure in progress with Ollie

Steph finds Bethany crouched like Gollum half-in Steph’s wardrobe

Shahida and Abby gang up on Melissa having restocked her fridge and thrown out the non-food
