Melissa is a trans woman and a graduate of the 2012 intake. Her sponsor was Abby. She is beginning a polyamorous relationship with Shahida and Abby[ch. 39].
Melissa is 172 cm (5'8") tall[LL] and has scars on her wrists from pre-transition suicide attempts[ch. 24]. She is thin and has long blonde hair; both Christine and Bethany think she resembles characters played by Melissa Joan Hart.
Pre-transition
Melissa was born on 3 September 1994 to Laura and Matthias Vogel. Her brother Russ followed about four years later.
Melissa experienced terrible dysphoria from an early age. She first attempted suicide at age eleven; around the same time, a classmate provoked her into a fight in the school changing room. During the altercation, she was hit in the back of the head by rocks; she grew out her hair afterwards to disguise the scarring. Her family moved to Almsworth soon after so that she could change schools.
At age twelve, she visited Peri Park, where she met Shahida and spent much of the holiday with her. Shahida subsequently introduced her to Rachel and Amy. When the holiday ended, Laura revealed to her children that she had a serious illness (possibly cancer) and might not get better.

Dorley
Melissa was added to the 2012 intake on 4 November by Abby, who intercepted her leaving the Legend nightclub. Abby had been surveilling Melissa since their first meeting, when Melissa was admitted to Saints, and realised she was preparing to commit suicide. Instead, Abby offered her a new life, an opportunity to start over as someone new.[ch. 24]

Return to Dorley
Melissa's hiatus from Dorley Hall ended on 12 December 2019 when, while reviewing her own record on the Dorley network, she discovered that Stephanie was at Dorley.[ch. 24] Believing she had been captured as part of a standard intake, Melissa took a leave of absence from her job to return to Dorley Hall with a taser. She found Stephanie in the dining hall and attempted to "rescue" her, leading to a tense confrontation in the conservatory with Christine and several of the second-years before realising that Steph is transgender, and was at Dorley of her own free will. Once Melissa regained her composure, she and Steph had a heartfelt reunion, after which Steph escorted Melissa to the kitchen for another reunion, with Shahida.
