Chapter 26: The One That Got Away is the eleventh and final chapter of the second book of the series, Secrets of Dorley Hall, and twenty-sixth chapter overall.

The chapter contains seven flashbacks to dates prior to 2006, mostly in alternation with eight scenes which all take place around Friday, 13 December 2019.

Plot

In 1985, Vincent recalls the murder of his parents days before, as he is incarcerated in the basement by ‘Grandmother’

In 2019, Melissa and Shahida go up to Steph’s apartment to turn in for the night

In 1986, Vincent meets Davy for the first time, as “Grandmother’s” new acquistion

In 2019, and after much self-analysis and consideration of ‘avatars of the choice’, Aaron is going to be a fucking girl

Later in 1986, Valérie names herself and Béatrice

In 2019, Melissa and Shahida wake up and have a second year visitation, Shahida chats with Rach who not reading her voicemail, had read the last resort email; then Melissa joins in the chat session

In early 1987, Valérie resolves Béatrice the method for escape

In 2019, Indira gives Melissa and Shahida the instructions for meeting with Rach

Later in 1987, Val and Dee looking out and caring for one another

In 2019, Melissa and Shahida go swimming, and Rachel goes diving into a conspiratorial rabbithole

Towards the end of 1987, Val is taken away to be given over to Smyth-Farrow

In 2019, Christine plans a trip with Paige and Indira, and Elle Lambert arrives with Béatrice

In 2005, Grandmother and Karen find Val trapped in the Smyth-Farrow estate, Stenordale Manor

In 2019, Steph catches up with Aaron, bringing him lunch after seeing Melissa and Shahida return; Aaron decides to kiss the girl

The next day, force-femmed Declan is delivered to the Smyth-Farrow estate
