Valérie Barbier is a coercively re-gendered woman who was feminized at Dorley Hall under Grandmother's regime. A contemporary and close friend of Beatrice, she survived several decades of abuse and slavery to be reunited with her.
Valérie was initially abducted at the age of 19 after her parents were murdered by their business partner, Dorothy Marsden.[ch. 26] She was given to the man who'd commissioned her, Crispin Smyth-Farrow, in 1987, and he held her prisoner in his home until his death.[ch. 26] After that, she fell into the custody of Dorothy and Silver River Solutions at Stenordale Manor,[ch. 26] where she acted as a menial and administrative servant[chapter reference needed], as well as a de facto sponsor for Declan[chapter reference needed] and, clandestinely, Trevor.[chapter reference needed] She escaped and fled to Dorley Hall in early 2020.[ch. 36]

Valérie formed a relationship with a new Dorley girl, who she initially knew as "Dee," but for whom later suggested a new name, Béatrice. Her role in the relationship was both romantic and something akin to the modern Dorley programme's sponsor, encouraging and supporting Béatrice in developing a genuine female identity.
