Chapter 38: Daylight is the second chapter of the fourth book of the series, and thirty-eighth chapter overall.

The title references Ollie seeing the sun rise, after several months of incarceration in the basement.

The chapter contains 24 scenes, all but the last taking place on Sunday, 5 January 2020. The final scene jumps to the following Saturday the 11th.

Plot

Ollie records a dictaphone diary entry before his suicide attempt

Frankie plays snooker against herself until Tabitha comes to get her

Indira notices something weird with Ollie and organises personnel to check it out

Jane sees the bloodstained sheets and yells, “Get help!”

Frankie goes down to administer first aid to Ollie

Ollie’s stream of consciousness, receding and coming back to consciousness

Christine, Pippa, and Valérie watch Frankie stabilise Ollie

Frankie talks with Lisa while Dr Rahman prepares to stretcher Ollie out

Christine watches as Ollie, Dr Rahman, and Frankie go past and out, and a panicked Harmony arrives

Frankie arrives at the portacabins, and Dr Rahman asks Trev and her to clear out

Steph and the basement dwellers discuss what they suspect has happened to Ollie

Christine and Valérie see to making tea for Harmony when Frankie returns with Trevor

Steph notices Bethany’s bad reaction to news delivered by Tabitha of Ollie’s attempt

Beatrice debriefs Frankie

Abby goes to see Melissa, as instructed by Bea

Beth tells Steph about her own assault and subsequent suicide attempt
