Yasmin is a third-year girl in the 2017 intake. She has a very close bond with Julia, who she is dating.

Yasmin is Iranian and is over 177 cm (5'9.5") tall with "copper skin" and "near-black" hair with "softly muscled" upper arms. Beth estimates her to have "a pretty considerable natural beauty". She speaks with an east coast accent. Beth thinks she has a "sweet laugh". [SD 29]

She wears a chain with a small locket. [SD 29]

Yasmin shares her name with one of her great-grandmothers (and tells everyone as much), but confides to Beth that she actually got it out of a movie; she refuses to tell her which one, claiming she is "taking that secret to the grave". [SD 29]

Yasmin has found a job outside of the Hall instead of returning to classes at Saint Almsworth; [SD 7] she does not seem to like her boss. [SD 29] She alludes that the job is IT-related. [SD 37]

Pre-transition

Yasmin grew up as the only Iranian boy in a "tiny" village called Medsham, near Thelingford (close to where Vicky is from, though they never met before entering the programme). Describing herself as a "dorky teenage boy" trying to be cool to fit in, Yasmin began hanging out at the pool club in the village where she fell in with a group of older guys there while still underage. [SD 29]

While they brought her into the fold, she explains to Beth, the pressure to fit in with them led her to "be more like one of them than any of them were", requiring her to be better at pool and learn to hold her alcohol. She doesn't specify the details to Beth, but her association with the group and their social cachet was "transactional" and she resents the the things they got her to do, with women as their "marks". She admits to making life "difficult" for "a lot of women" during this time. [SD 29]

She sardonically likens herself to Beth as an "easily led complete fuckup". [SD 29]

Relationship with the Hall

After becoming isolated and anti-social associating only with Julia, Yasmin has begun to come around to the idea that they both need to better socialize with their Sisters before leaving the Hall; to work on this, she has started making an effort to hang around the common areas, such as the ground floor kitchen. She believes Julia will come around to the idea eventually. Despite initially harboring a grudge against Christine after their time in the basement together, she has started to warm up to her, admitting to herself that her reasons for disliking her were probably "rather petty"; she theorizes that she and Christine were just too similar at intake to get along and sardonically considers herself equally "neurotic". [SD 29]

As a show of goodwill, Christine (now a member of the staff) offers to put in a word with Indira to speak with Aunt Bea on behalf of Yasmin and Julia, who believe they are ready to leave the Hall. A few weeks later, Bea agrees to release the two girls early, in March 2020. Following this development, Yasmin increases her efforts to get to know her Sisters, starting by reaching out to Christine to thank her. Soon after, Aunt Bea apologizes to Yasmin on behalf of the Hall for not doing a better job at socializing her and Julia to begin with. [SD 27]

When Steph and Pippa decide Beth needs to talk to someone she can relate to about her progress, Yasmin volunteers to speak with her, recognizing herself as the obvious second choice after Christine for someone with a background similar to Beth's. She tells Beth that they both had always "done what's easy" before Dorley and she, like Beth, had to work to become the person she could have been "without all the bullshit"; she assures Beth that she will get there with time. [SD 29]

Yasmin tells Beth that the Hall has given her the capacity for happiness and contentment and she now understands herself and sees herself as someone with potential; she is "working on" being happy. [SD 29]

As Yasmin and Julia warm to Christine and the other girls, they offer to "pitch in more", both to help Christine take advantage of some much-needed time off and to model a good example for the boys in the basement. [SD 37]

Pre-transition associates

Pool club guys - A group of older men Yasmin fell in with as a teen. Looking back, she says of them, "I’m glad I’ll never have to see any of those fuckers ever again.” [SD 29]

Parents - Yasmin alludes to difficulties at home, and that afterward, "things at home ended". [SD 29]

Trivia

  • Yasmin claims she and Julia spent their "entire" second year at the Hall having sex on the pool table in the basement. [SD 37]
